Manni Singh’s journey began in the small farming village of Tibba in Northern India, where he grew up amidst the Green Revolution. His early exposure to agriculture was a natural part of life, but it was during his college years that he began to view farming through a scientific lens. This shift in perspective inspired him to pursue a career in agronomy.

Manni’s academic path led him to Punjab Agricultural University, where he earned his M.S. in Agronomy Science in 2006. He continued his studies at the University of Florida, completing his Ph.D. in Agronomy and Crop Physiology in 2011. Attracted to Florida’s climate, which was somewhat similar to Northern India, Manni began his faculty career there before moving to Michigan State University in November 2016. Now an Assistant Professor and Cropping Systems Agronomist, he works with soybean, corn, and winter wheat, which are central to Michigan’s diverse agricultural landscape.

His role at Michigan State University encompasses teaching, research, and extension. His lab typically includes field technicians, graduate and undergraduate students, and an international internship program. Manni’s previous experience with tropical grasses and sugarcane agronomy, gained during his time in Florida, has enriched his approach to his current work.

Manni is dedicated to balancing short-term profitability with long-term sustainability in agriculture. He focuses on improving system resiliency to extreme weather events and assists farmers with planting timelines and crop management strategies. His achievements include conducting research on winter wheat and optimizing planting strategies for soybeans, addressing the specific needs of local farmers.

Since joining Science for Success, Manni has valued the opportunity to collaborate with experts and develop multi-site, multi-year projects. He appreciates the ability to extend his impact beyond Michigan and contribute to broader agricultural advancements.

Outside of work, Manni enjoys spending time with his family, watching sports, and taking weekend drives. He is actively involved in his community, attending his children’s sports games and engaging in family activities. Manni Singh’s story is a testament to his dedication to advancing agriculture while staying connected to his roots and family.
