Laura Lindsey’s journey in agriculture began in the small town of Plymouth, Ohio. Born and raised in a family of educators, with her father teaching 4th grade and her mother teaching 7th grade science, Laura developed a keen interest in science and agriculture from a young age. Her rural upbringing and many science fair projects centered around agriculture in her community fueled this passion.

Laura pursued her academic interests at The Ohio State University, earning a B.S. in Environmental and Natural Resources and an M.S. in Soil Science in 2009. She furthered her education with a Ph.D. in Crop and Soil Sciences from Michigan State University in 2012. After completing her Ph.D., Laura returned to Ohio State, where she became a faculty member in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science in 2012.

In her role, Laura balances a 75% extension and 25% research appointment, focusing on applied research and small grains. Her lab is composed of two full-time technicians, five to six graduate students, and a visiting scholar. Laura values mentoring her students, taking pride in their professional growth and achievements.

Throughout her career, Laura has achieved several significant milestones. She has been promoted to full professor, became the first female to serve as C3 Division Chair of the Crop Science Society of America and will be a board member of the Crop Science Society of America starting in January 2025. She also serves as the journal editor for the Crop Journal.

Laura’s research interests include soybean and  wheat performance tests, cultural practices, and specialty small grains such as winter malting barley and hybrid rye. Notable studies under her leadership include a biological seed treatment study, which included 104 locations, and a harvest date study, both led by her Ph.D. students.

Since the inception of the Science for Success program, Laura has been an integral part of its development. She values the network of colleagues within the team, appreciating the ease of communication and collaboration it offers. She served as the inaugural Research Committee Chair for Science for Success, playing a critical role in defining committees.

Laura lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband Alex, who is also a faculty member, and their three children: Ruth, Dottie, and Dan. Laura loves traveling with her family, often visiting Disney World and recently exploring the beach for the first time. Her passion for travel is a significant part of her life, as she cherishes creating memorable experiences with her loved ones.

Laura Lindsey’s story is a testament to her dedication to agriculture, education, and research. Her journey reflects her commitment to advancing agricultural practices and mentoring the next generation of scientists, all while balancing a fulfilling family life.
